![]() ![]() ![]() The main star map has the most problems here. There are also screens for diplomacy options as well as a few summary screens that offer information about the overall state of your empire. You can switch back and forth among the star map, colony management, research, ship design and production screens pretty easily but the information contained therein is scattered about. What do I mean by that? Simply that the game interface is too cumbersome and too hard to navigate. It just falls short on the implementation. This is particularly disappointing because Reach for the Stars (RFTS from now on on account of I'm lazy) has a lot of depth in the design. But what works in that game just doesn't hold up here. In fact, one of my favorite games of all time has still got to be the original Master of Orion. There aren't that many places where you can get your turn-based space empire fix right now, but even so, this one is just too lackluster to hold your attention for more than an hour or two.Īnd it's not that I have anything against turn-based strategy. ![]() There's a little bit of fun here for the really rabid game playing types, but unless you've been shipped off to a desert island with no other games, this one probably isn't worth much of your time. Hint: Don't want all 4 scouts going to one place? Type a smaller number. In short, Reach for the Stars is somewhat unexciting and confusing. Hint: Destinations are auto-complete, so start typing! Hint: ESC is your Friend, but only to get you to the "menu bar" (bottom of screen) Hint: the Delete ("./Del") key helps CLOSE the active/highlighted window. Hint: the Minus ("-") key helps cycle between open windows. If he recorded voice audio as a separate track, he was lucky - at least when he threw that out the window for all the swearing, he still had all the game beeps to indicate to us that the game didn't like him very much. This is an example of how NOT to make a game-play video. Watch this video by SquakeNet - he must've been SOOOOO frustrated, because he didn't figure out the keys before he started playing. ![]()
